This is our first experience with the Japan Crate and I must admit that this is a lot to get through. The problem with getting a box like this is that there are SO MANY THINGS TO SAMPLE. Rather than just showing you what’s in the box – all the nifty packaging! – we’ll give you our take on what it all tastes like.  Come back for the taste review this weekend!

Most of the taste review

KonpeitoThe Konpeito is a sugar candy that comes in four colors. The colors don’t have any effect on the taste. This is pretty much rock candy with a little bit of flavoring. The orange has a faint orange taste and the yellow is kind of citrus. Maybe.

DSC_0043Tastes plastic. The gummy outer layer has the flavor of many Asian candies. It has a hint of the good old Botan candies with almost a dull rice flavor. Once you get to the citrus center it becomes apparent that there is a significant, little kick. The sourness isn’t potent at all. It has that artificial citrus flavor.

TDSC_0026he Fruit Drop was your typical hard candy, the type that should have a flavor to it associated with a color – green = apple, yellow = citrus, red = punch – but not these. nope, these pretty much all tasted the same.  The sweetness isn’t as powerful as American candies so the finish is nice and mellow. Trust me, this isn’t like one of the little round Brach’s candies that are normally found in restaurant candy dishes next to the cashier.
