Loot Crate

According to their website http://lootcrate.com:
Epic Geek + Gamer Gear. Loot Crate delivers the best in geek + gaming gear. From collectibles, apparel, tech gadgets, art, and other epic gear, it’s like Comic-Con in a box!

The March 2015 Loot Crate arrived at our door and we were pretty excited to get it. Keep in mind that we have now gotten to the point where Loot Crate has conditioned us to salivate like a Pavlovian dog when the latest crate being delivered is a remote possibility. We were pretty happy with the February “Play!” Loot Crate and were excited about the  March box. When it arrived we were pretty content with what we got.

Stylin’ and Profilin’

The nice thing about the Loot Crate is that normally the theme for the box is very well put together. This month we got our James Bond inspired t-shirt, the Blink Time Stealth Wrist Watch and a nice, shiny Loot Crate button.

At first I thought the BlinkTime was a watch cover. When I looked over the packaging and saw that it was a working digital watch I was pretty intrigued.

Oh, hells yes! Sure, it’s a goofy watch but that got me smiling pretty fast!  The Blink Yime Stealth watch is a matte, black rubbery material that covers the face of the watch. This eliminates any glare or reflection. To activate it you merely press the base of the watch face and some nice, old school digital numbers pop up and tell you the time. The watch itself probably retails for about $8-$9. Surprisingly, this watch is more useful than the $500 black Movado Bold that I own. The Movado is an analog watch that is also completely blacked out. However, it is rendered completely useless when you use it in the dark. No the Blink Time! The digital umbers are bright and crisp – which may new problem if you’re trying to be a stealthy ninja creeping about in the dark.

Stuff to Play With

Also in this Covert Loot Crate were 3 items of interesting. You got a paracord bracelet that you could use during emergencies. You never know when you’ll want to secure something, tether something or kidnap someone. You also get two note pads for keeping ‘field notes’. Sure, they’re just note pads but they look officially spy-worthy. Finally, you get your Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. lanyard. That item was made famous by Patton Oswalt. When we feasted our peepers on that we speculate on the numerous ways we could be ‘covert’ with it. They say you can practically infiltrate anyplace solely by using a clipboard, a hardhat, a safety vest and a badge. I wonder if anyone would notice that my badge was my S.H.I.E.L.D. lanyard. And I wonder if this tactic would work if I wandered into the Vatican.

The Paper Chase

This time around you get a book of MadLibs to wrap your head around and the regular information cards and adverts. It was really nice getting information about the exclusive Loot Crate paracord bracelet. You also get a postcard for a free download of a comic, Ninjak #1. As with each Loot Crate you get their informative magazine filled with articles, photos of your loot and examples of the SUPER AWESOME COOL STUFF YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON IF YOU DON’T GET THEIR EPIC crate. You may also enjoy the “Oblivion” comic which was included. Having not read that particular series I may have to take the time and break open that plastic bag and give it a read while I’m on the train.

Final Thoughts

Thematically, the Loot Crate tied everything together very well. Everything was somehow related to being an undercover agent of some sort. Even the box that it came in was very engaging. We were scanning the QR code, decrypting the the letter jumble on the box and enjoying the results of our little treasure hunt. The fact that there was a story behind the box really pulled it together.

The contents of the box were equally engaging. To be honest, there have been better boxes. There have also been worse boxes. This box was a pleasant surprise. If you’re a Marvel fanboy like Andrew and Brian then you’ll really enjoy the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. lanyard. I was perfectly smitten with the watch. I suppose that there was something for everyone in this crate.

So far Loot Crate has done a pretty nice job making a product that seems high quality, engaging and worth the $20+ that you paid for it.
