Well, here we go with our review of the May 2015 Loot Crate. I was pretty happy to get my Crate in the mail. And then we got another one. And another one. And a final one came in. So, we somehow have 4 Loot Crates for the month of May.

Let’s start unboxing!

Rick & Morty 300 Piece Puzzle

According to Wikipedia “The series follows the misadventures of alcoholic scientist Rick and his easily influenced grandson Morty, who split their time between domestic family life and intergalactic space travel.”

If you keep reading about the development, though, you see how this cartoon is in it’s second season on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim –

“The result was The Adventures of Doc and Mharti, an animated short starring Doc Brown and Marty McFly, characters from the Back to the Future film trilogy. In the short, which Harmon would dub “a bastardization, a pornographic vandalization,” Doc Brown urges Mharti that the solution to all of his problems is to give him oral sex.”

Oh, boy.

Marvel Ice Cube Tray

For this and the next few items I’m just going to let the images speak for themselves. The Marvel juggernaut appears to infiltrate every geeky subscription box out there. Oh, phooey! Did you see what happened? I can’t even use the word “juggernaut” without it somehow being a reference to a Marvel property!

Bravest Warriors Comic, Mad Magazine and the Loot Crate Magazine

I’ve never read the Bravest Warriors comic nor have I watched the animated series. Here’s episode 1 from season 1 –

Hmmm. I guess it’s ok. I understand how kids might enjoy watching shows like this as it combines a seemingly ‘adult’ edginess as well pretty juvenile jokes. I might take the time to force myself to marathon watch this and Adventure Time. Crazy theory: Bravest Warriors and Adventure Time seemingly occur in the same universe.

You also get an exclusive Mad Magazine for Loot Crate. I have yet to open it and read it. I remember back in the day, though, when I would collect Mad Magazine because my pre-adolescent self thought it was HILARIOUS. I used to love the Spy-Vs-Spy, Sergio Aragones cartoons and the folding back cover commentary. This one has their mascot, Alfred E. Newman, dressed as Aqua Man from the forthcoming Batman v. Superman movie. Or will it be the Justice League movie? Is it me or does this DC Movie seem like they’re trying to squish too much stuff into it?

The Loot Crate Magazine has an interesting article titled, “The Greatest Comic Teams of All Time”. When Andrew angrily read the title to me I thought he was going to say “Desi & Lucy” or The Marx Brothers or the Three Stooges. When I finally read the article I can see why he almost had an aneurysm with their declaration of the  #1 team in comics.

Team Fortress 2 and Loot Crate “Unite!” Button

Buttons! Buttons! Buttons everywhere! Are buttons really still a thing? It seems like everyone and their mother is putting them in the boxes. Although I do admire the Team Fortress buttons.

Final Thoughts

We didn’t really know we would receive this Loot Crate. Literally speaking we received it four times. Compared to past crates it was a little middle of the road. It wasn’t awe inspiring (there wasn’t really a ‘toy’ or collectible to ooh and ahh over) and it definitely wasn’t bad (there weren’t sexist cosplay cards unrelated to the theme of the the box. Yeah, I’m looking at you, Loot Crate.)

Working off gut reaction, you can see how a kid would be tickled to receive this curated box every month. The quality can be inconsistent over a number of months but this box, the May 2015 box, seems reasonable. The important thing for Loot Crate is whether or not they succeed in capturing my attention so that I subscribe for another box or for a multiple month plan. I’m not sure if how I feel about this is a good or a bad thing. Maybe it is like a gambling addiction – I want to keep going because I think the next one will be the big winner.

With that said, I’ll wait until next month to decide whether I continue this subscription 🙂 Currently, I’m pretty satisfied with the Loot Crate service.

My name would probably be Bettie Bye and my super power would be bringing an overwhelming drowsiness to anyone I’m near “Comforting Insomniacs and Whiny Babies the World Over” and of course I would be able to fly because wearing a cape just isn’t cool if you can’t fly.
