I recently moved to a townhouse which and I was confronted with a problem that every townhouse dweller encounters: having to cut the grass. At the outset, it doesn’t really seem like that big a deal since you’re working with yard that has a very small footprint. But that’s the rub – the yards are so small that you really aren’t sure if you should get yard service, merely use a weed whacker to cut down the grass or purchase a lawn mower. I decided to purchase a lawn mower. Even then I was confronted with more decisions

  • buy a push mower
  • fuss about with a gas mower or
  • go for an electric

With Earth Day having been in the month of April I decided to go the electric route. This ultimately brought me to the Sun Joe Mow Joe MJ401E 14″ Electric 12 Amp electric lawn mower.  Two things brought me to this conclusion – it was much more friendly to the environment and it was on sale for 27% off at Home Depot.

The packaging

As you can see in the images above the box is screaming at you that this electric mower is good for the environment. There is so much green on this box that there’s no way that you could miss the implied message.

Let’s open it up!

As you can see, everything is nice and neatly packaged together. It is all compact with very little extra packaging, which is very nice.

The contents

Since everything was meticulously placed in the box it was no problem finding all the parts and eventually putting it together.

Does it work?

The short answer of whether or not this small, electric lawn mower works is ‘yes’. It is nice and small but the use of an electric extension cord is a little cumbersome. I’m sure I’ll get used to it. The other problem that I have is that I’m used to larger gas powered mowers with big ol’ honkin’ grass catching bags. See that small yard above? I had to empty the bag 5 times. Granted, it could have been the result of me having to cut a yard that hadn’t been mowed for over 4 weeks.

Conclusion

I’ve only used the machine once and there are a few things that I find problematic

  • The grass catcher requires regular emptying
  • The 12 amps does an adequate job but when the grass catcher gets full then the clippings tend to get caught in the blade and the grass intake chute causing it to jam the blade.
  • The cutting height isn’t adjustable.

Other than that it does the job. I really can’t complain about it since I’ve only used it one time. I’ll let you guys know more in the future after I’ve cut my grass a few more times. It isn’t awe inspiring but it gets the job done. Nice job!
